Sacubitril and Valsartan are combined together in this medicine.
Sacubitril and Valsartan is used to treat long-term heart failure (weakness and inability of the heart to pump blood).
Take Sacubitril + Valsartan exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.
The dose of Sacubitril + Valsartan will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment regimen depending on your condition, response and tolerability to this medicine.
Sacubitril + Valsartan must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- history of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, and difficulty in breathing) while taking a medicine used to treat high blood pressure or heart disease (e.g. captopril, losartan or similar medicines)
- diabetes and you are being treated with aliskiren (medicine for high blood pressure)
- severe liver disease
as Sacubitril + Valsartan may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Sacubitril + Valsartan if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with this medicine, alert your doctor immediately. Sacubitril + Valsartan may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven birth control methods while taking this medicine.
DO NOT take this medicine with other medicines for high blood pressure such as ACE inhibitors . Sacubitril + Valsartan should not be taken within 36 hours after discontinuing ACE inhibitor therapy. Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- low blood pressure
- liver disease
- kidney disease e.g. narrowing of the artery in the kidney
- heart disease e.g. narrowing of the heart valve
- adrenal gland disorder
If you are going for an operation, including minor surgery and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- You may need to have routine blood tests (e.g. potassium level, liver and kidney function test). Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these tests.
- Regular monitoring of blood pressure may be needed while you are taking this medicine.
Sacubitril + Valsartan may cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
You may also feel dizzy when getting up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking this medicine for the very first time. This is common and should improve gradually as you get used to Sacubitril +Valsartan. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position.
Other side effects include any of the following: cough, diarrhoea, headache, nausea, stomach pain, tiredness and spinning sensation.
Sacubitril + Valsartan will cause the level of your red blood cells to drop. Red blood cells carry oxygen around your body. A fall in the level of red blood cells may make you feel tired and worn out.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue/throat
- difficulty in breathing
- signs of low blood pressure e.g. dizziness, light headedness
- signs of high potassium level e.g. abnormal heartbeat, confusion, weakness, numbness or tingling sensation)
- unable to pass urine
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Sacubitril + Valsartan with other medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. alacepril benazepril captopril,cilazapril, enalapril, fosinopril, imidapril, lisinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril, ramipril, trandolapril, zofenopril (ACE inhibitors); aliskiren
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. atorvastatin, simvastatin
- medicines used to treat impotence and/or pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the blood vessels leading to the lungs) e.g. sildenafil
- medicines for pain and inflammation (NSAIDs) e.g. ibuprofen, mefenamic acid, naproxen
- medicines to treat depression e.g. lithium
- diuretics or "water pills" e.g. furosemide, triamterene
- medicines to treat TB (an infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Sacubitril + Valsartan.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Do not take potassium supplements. Avoid taking too much food that is high in potassium, such as orange juice, bananas or prunes. Do not use salt substitutes that contain potassium.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from moisture.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
